Level 3 Qualifications - AS/A2

As part of a Government initiative all schools in England and Wales have offered a new curriculum structure since Autumn 2000.  This involves the introduction of new qualifications at AS level (Advanced Subsidiary) and A2 level.

WHY?

  • To encourage a broad study

  • To enable and encourage flexibility

  • To equip students with the skills and knowledge to enhance their opportunity and choices for University and Employment.

  • Students who have a good to high level of success at GCSE level will be expected to study FOUR SUBJECTS in the first year of Sixth Form (Year 12).

  • This will mean choosing four subjects at AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Level (pitched at the standard that students normally reach after one year of post 16 study).

  • Each subject at AS level will be examined during the first year of study.

  • Students can then decide whether to continue with a chosen subject or to relinquish it and achieve an AS qualification.

  • The majority of our students will probably decide to continue with three subjects into Year 13 and thereby achieve the full A2 award (equivalent to A level). A2 courses begin immediately after AS exams in the summer term.

  • Students will be expected to study 4 subjects unless otherwise advised.

All students who follow AS/A2 courses will be required to also complete the Welsh Baccalaureate diploma. For more information Click Here.
