The Extended Essay

IB diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an extended essay of about 4000 words.

The choice of essay is up to the student to decide (although guidance will be given) and so offers the opportunity to research a topic that may be of special interest to them. This will introduce to the students the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at University level, whilst having the direct guidance of a subject specialist.

The topic chosen by the student must be related to one of the subjects offered by the IB, but does not necessarily have to be any of the subjects they are studying. Therefore the student could chose to deepen their programme of study by researching a topic in one of their chosen subjects, or they may add to the breadth of their academic experience by selecting to choose a topic from a different subject area. It is expected that most students will select a topic from one of their higher level subjects. A sensible choice of essay could also help secure a University place.

A total of about 40 hours of private study and writing time is recommended and ample time will be given between deciding on the essay topic and handing it in. Throughout this time, a member of staff will be supervising the progress of the essay. This supervisor will be a specialist in the subject chosen.

Extended essays are assessed according to both general and subject specific criteria.
