This course can be studied at either Higher or Standard level.   It is a literature-based course which gives you the chance to study Literature from all over the world, in translation or in English.   The course is planned to cover the novel, travel writing, letters or (auto) biography, short stories, drama and poetry.

There are no open book examinations but parts 2 and 4 are orally assessed on tape.

In Part 1, modern Japanese writing in translation gives you an impression of a culture that continues to fascinate us.

Part 2 includes a Shakespeare play

Part 3 focuses on drama around the world

Part 4 studies the individual’s place in society, as explored in 4 novels from Canada, America, Turkey and India.

ASSESSMENT:

HIGHER LEVEL

Written examination - 4hrs - 50%

Section A

2 hours commentary on unseen passage - 25%

 

Section B

2 hours on Essay on Part 3 Works - 25%

STANDARD LEVEL

Written examination - 3hrs - 50%

Section A

1 hour commentary on unseen passage - 25%

 

Section B

2 hours on Essay on Part 3 Works - 25%

HIGHER LEVEL and STANDARD LEVEL:

Two written course work assignments - 20%

A   1000-2000 words based on Part 1 Works

B    700-900 words based on Part 1, 3 or 4 Works

Oral Assessment:

A   Continuous assessment of Part 2 and Part 4 Works

B   One formal assessment based on Part 2 Works

The written examination and the two written course work assignments are externally assessed.

The oral assessment is carried out by the teacher and are externally moderated.

The assessment of Parts 2 and 4 of the course is entirely oral.
