Mathematics

Higher level

This course is intended for students with a good ability in Mathematics who find the subject interesting and challenging.  It is suitable for those wishing to continue studying Mathematics or areas with a strong mathematical base (such as Computer Science, Physics, Engineering and Technology) at university.

Higher level concentrates on many areas of ‘Pure’ Mathematics, some of which will have been met at GCSE.  These include:

Algebra, Functions, Trigonometry, Calculus, Matrices and Vectors.

Other topics that will be studied are taken from the fields of Statistics and Probability, thus allowing some degree of specialism in an area of applied mathematics.

The IB strongly encourages the use of ICT in mathematics. In many of the topics studied graphical calculator activity goes hand in hand with more rigorous written methods.

ASSESSMENT

Three examinations (80%).

These are taken at the end of the course and are marked externally.

Paper 1  (core) - short questions – 2 hours.  30%

Paper 2  (core) - longer questions – 2 hours.  30%

Paper 3 (option) – 1 hour. 20%

Portfolio (20%) - This is assessed internally and consists of two 5hr assignments undertaken during the course.

Standard level

This course is intended to provide a cross-section of mathematical skills, through reasoning and competence.  It is suitable for those wishing to study subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Economics and Geography at higher levels.  It is not sufficient, however, to provide enough background for more mathematical courses at university.

The course consists of the following topics:

Number and Algebra, Sets and Logic, Geometry and Trigonometry, Statistics     and Probability, Functions, Financial Mathematics.

A graphical calculator is required for this course.

ASSESSMENT

Two examinations (80%).

These are taken at the end of the course and marked externally.

Paper 1 – short questions – 1 ½ hours – 40%

Paper 2 – longer questions – 1 ½ hours – 40 %

One project (20%).  This is undertaken during the two years and marked internally.
