Aim of the programme

The aim of the programme in Theatre Arts is to help students understand the nature of the Theatre;  to understand it by making it as well as by studying it;  to understand it not only with their minds but with their senses, their bodies and their emotions;  to understand the forms it takes in cultures other than their own and through this understanding to better understand themselves, their society and their world.

Programme outline

Part 1 : Performance Skills

An introduction to:

  • ensemble work

  • mime/movement

  • voice

  • improvisation/role play

  • acting techniques/characterisation

Part 2 : Theatre Studies

Studies from an international perspective of selected historical and theoretical developments in the theatre

Part 3 : Play Analysis and Interpretation

A detailed study of a minimum of three play texts as plans for action, in the original or in translation.    The plays must be chosen from more than one theatrical tradition and more than one culture.

Part 4 : Theatre Production

A practical study of the basic principles and practices of theatre production.

In addition, those studying the HIGHER syllabus must undertake the following:

Part 5 : Individual Study

A project, chosen by the candidate, on one aspect of Theatre Arts
